Why I still start on paper

Why every illustration I make still begins with a pencil and a cheap sketchbook.

Almost everything I deliver is digital, yet every project starts on paper. From scribble to final, the first steps never happen on a screen.

Paper forgives

A cheap sketchbook makes it easy to draw badly, and drawing badly is how good ideas appear. On a screen, undo makes every line feel temporary.

  • 01. Rough
  • 02. Sketch
  • 03. Colour
  • 04. Final

Only the last two steps happen digitally, and the roughs always stay in the sketchbook.
